Chord Diagram of CoEDL Co-Publication (Institution Colour-Coded Version)

This visualization shows a social network of CoEDL members (CI and PIs only) and how they were connected by co-publication of papers before the centre launched (data based off google scholar listings). The colour of the arcs around the edge of the circle shows the universities or other institution a member is primarily affiliated with. Links are coloured when two people from the same institution published together, and are grey when the co-authors are from different institutions. Is the centre made up of people who were already collaborating, or does it bring together people who haven’t worked together before? Are there locally connected groups of centre members? Does institution predict co-publication?

The chord diagram visualization used here is adapted from Mike Bostock’s chord diagram example. Chord diagrams are a form of network visualization where the nodes are arranged around in a circle, and curved links show how different nodes are connected. A chord diagram provides a more structured view than a freeform network diagram, which can make it easier to see the overall pattern of connections in the network. Moving the mouse over any of the outside arcs representing a CoEDL member shows only the links involving that person, allowing the collaboration links of any single member to be seen clearly.

Compare this version of the chord diagram to a plain and more stylised version of the visualization.
